Patrick Ball, Benetech's Chief Scientist and Vice President of our Human Rights Program, is spending much of this year in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Patrick is working with a UN human rights project. Aubert called for a full government investigation of Chebeya’s death as did Human Rights Watch.

A month ago I listened to Christine Karumba, the Country Director for Women for Women International in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, tell Honorata's story on the Voices on Genocide Prevention podcast. The show ended, and I immediately signed up to be a Women for Women International sponsor.

Increasingly, rape of women is being used as a tool of war, not just in large scale wars as we saw in the Serbian and Bosnian conflict, but as we saw recently in Kenya and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Without the voices of 51% of the world's population, our chances of making this world a better place for all of us are about zero.
