While I wouldn't know an API from Ape if it stood right in front of me beat its chest, but I have seen the results of open APIs in social media apps like Flickr. Judi Sohn has a comparison of the two approaches. Plaxo, Facebook, Flickr, Google Maps, blogging, forums???and Better yet it allows for seamless data integration.

gods: Flickr, RSS, Google, etc. Deliver, don’t just hype - of course, marketing is important, but when the rubber really has to meet the road, be there with more than vaporware. The Kintera API looks, quite honestly, seriously wimpy in comparison to either Convio or Salesforce. What’s to lose?
