WIPO has a mandate from its member states, and is working to address the need to change laws and get more accessible books flowing. It remains an option under the Treaty, though.

Literacy and access to knowledge underpins just about every social good, from education, to economic development, to health, to women’s empowerment, democracy and respect for human rights. To bring the power of books to everybody on this planet, we must make books truly accessible. Love of the print book. It made me who I am.

The third pillar of Bookshare International is developing new language capabilities.

Highlights of this Update: Global Literacy Human Rights Benetech Labs Communications Global Literacy Bookshare celebrated a double milestone this summer, reaching over 200,000 available titles in our collection and serving over 250,000 members with disabilities! The Treaty was signed on the spot by over 50 countries.

Note from Beth: During my trip to India in February, I was introduced to a nonprofit children's book publisher in India, Pratham Books. “It was set up to fill a gap in the market for good quality, reasonably priced children’s books in a variety of Indian languages. Its] mission is to make books affordable for every child in India.”

We’re against piracy, and have made commitments to authors and publishers to encourage compliance with copyright law. We provide accessible ebooks that can be spoken aloud, turned into Braille or large print. We write software for people with disabilities as well as human rights and environmental groups. And then they go away.
