She has been passionate about the issue of immigrant rights since 2002, when she worked at Casa del Migrantes in Tijuana, Mexico, a shelter for immigrants and deportees. After she left Mexico she worked with refugee communities in Philadelphia and did research on migrant youth at a research center in Chicago.
