Freecycle is a nonprofit that facilitates people giving and getting stuff for free in their own towns. But I think it's grown way beyond that, and it's become a real solid community-building tool. There's a study done in Iowa. DB: I will add that when I set it up, it was for purely, let's say, selfish tree-hugging motives.
