The blog documents not only the lives of the people in Nata, but is a tool to raise funds for a support group for residents living with AIDS, an AIDS prevention program where youth use the arts to educate others about AIDS, and the Nata clinic. Nata is a village of 5,000 people in Botswana.

David Barnard has completed six of these grueling races: The Kalahari Desert in Botswana and South Africa (its name is derived from a Tswana word meaning "the great thirst"). He runs these ultramarathons to raise money and generate awareness for charitable causes. The Sahara Desert in Egypt (the hottest desert on earth).

The first opportunity that I had to go back was to work in a refugee camp in Botswana. The first four years, because I was a student at the time, there's no good way to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars when you are 20 years old and have no experience or results besides to get a lot of people to raise money individually.
