David Barnard has completed six of these grueling races: The Kalahari Desert in Botswana and South Africa (its name is derived from a Tswana word meaning "the great thirst"). He runs these ultramarathons to raise money and generate awareness for charitable causes. There is no prize money. There is no prize money.

I was actually making money as a feature writer in a great city, but it became really obvious to me that my definition of journalism, and the definition of journalism that I was being asked to practice, as a member of mainstream media, were not the same. We are also in discussions in Peru, in Burkina Faso, and in Botswana as well.

He was able to get some work digging pit latrines to put himself through one semester of his remaining high school education, and then he ran out of money. The first opportunity that I had to go back was to work in a refugee camp in Botswana. Completely random. So, that's what we did. We would bring students.
