Charles got interested in this type of charitable work while he served in the Peace Corps in Paraguay in the early 1990s. He saw firsthand the benefits that access to technology, especially computers and the Internet, have for remote organizations with limited resources. He subsequently worked as an ecotourism developer in Costa Rica.
