Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Venture2Impact (V2I) — a nonprofit organization based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada — had a business model that was entirely based on global travel. We developed stronger relationships within our team and across regions — even as we collaborated on this project from our homes.

Erickson founded FORGE (Facilitating Opportunities for Refugee Growth and Empowerment) in 2003 when she was a 20 year-old junior studying public policy at Stanford University. The projects can range from preschools, to libraries and computer training centers, to women empowerment programs. It's the same thing in a development context.

It seemed to be a really good and sustainable model, and we raised around $300,000 doing that kind of work. The other thing that Off the Mat, Into the World does is that we create and model our own outreach projects, but on a grander scale. I have two children and it's a joy to have watched them grow and thrive over the years.
