These initiatives were credited with influencing the Italian parliament in 1991 to create specific legal forms or “social cooperatives.” Though the resulting structures can be complex, social enterprises are increasingly transforming traditional nonprofits and corporate philanthropy into new hybrid organizations (Billitteri, 2007).
