David Barnard has completed six of these grueling races: The Kalahari Desert in Botswana and South Africa (its name is derived from a Tswana word meaning "the great thirst"). He runs these ultramarathons to raise money and generate awareness for charitable causes. You might call it ultra-charity.

The first opportunity that I had to go back was to work in a refugee camp in Botswana. The first four years, because I was a student at the time, there's no good way to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars when you are 20 years old and have no experience or results besides to get a lot of people to raise money individually.
