Ultramarathons are extreme running events: 250-kilometer (155-mile) foot races over five or six days in the harshest environments on Earth. David Barnard has completed six of these grueling races: The Kalahari Desert in Botswana and South Africa (its name is derived from a Tswana word meaning "the great thirst").

The first opportunity that I had to go back was to work in a refugee camp in Botswana. I think that the only way that I got by was to be open and honest with myself about mistakes that I, or the organization, had made along the way and lessons that we had learned; and through that process, cleanse yourself of the guilt of holding it all in.
