I've always had chat as a back channel to a conference call and used it to summarize key points as a sort of electronic flip chart. Nancy takes us through a gradient of modalities and technologies for synchronous meetings. We try and duplicate offline experiences (be they useful or not) and not really take advantage of the medium.
