In the early 1920s, Dorothy Arzner was one of a handful of working female directors as the industry transitioned from silent films. Along with earning her PhD (she is credited as the first woman in East and Central Africa to do so), Maathai taught at the university level, worked in the Kenya government, and founded the Greenbelt Movement.
