Age, class, race, gender and location play huge roles now in how people want to receive information and calls to action from nonprofits. While there are a good number of tech-savvy hipsters out there that understand terms like “ Static Web ”, “ Dynamic Content ”, “ User-Generated ”, “ Cloud Computing ”, and “ Semantic Web ”, the majority of nonprofits don’t talk or understand such tech speak.

Ro)bots (or spiders) are scripts or applications that search out information on the web. Search engines constantly scour the web for information using this method -- but bots are also used by those nasty folks on the web that like to steal your information or trash your website. Administrators of Causes accounts on MySpace received a notice via email stating, “Thank you for the work you’ve done on Causes on MySpace. Do to the lack of activity on MySpace, we’ve decided to focus our efforts on the Causes Application on Facebook.” The message indicated that all Causes-related pages and content on MySpace would be taken down at the end of the week.

1) Spend some time (not all of it) capturing people’s basic contact information (name, state, and email address at the very least) as part of your social networking strategy. Just last week, MySpace eliminated Causes , the peer-to-peer fundraising service that started on Facebook. An estimated 184,000 people used Causes on MySpace and now it’s gone. What would happen to your nonprofit’s outreach work if Facebook or Twitter shut down? Since you don’t own the data, you wouldn’t be able to salvage it.

Today, an interview with Shelley Bernstein , the Manager of Information Systems at the Brooklyn Museum, and the engine behind that museum’s fabulous forays into Web 2.0. Tell me about the background for the Brooklyn Museum’s community web component. And it was so clear at the time. We started slowly with the MySpace page , and we started in earnest with Flickr. Let’s say you wanted to find a model museum using Web 2.0 to support programs and exhibits.
