Our programs end up being the hub of the local science learning ecosystem--especially in communities where there isn''t a science center for miles in any direction. In places that succeeded, at that point, a local coalition was in place to fund the Workshop. Where it didn''t work, no local support stepped up. It''s powerful.

The best way I can really push my own participatory practice and thinking is to operate an institution and work with a community I care about over time. The content is multidisciplinary, with a collection that includes both local history and contemporary art. I wanted to be part of that, and I can't wait to get started.

The best book I've read on the topic is Facilitators Guide to Participatory Decision-Making by Sam Kaner. Participants' stories are often more valuable than their opinions. We almost always use nametags with a playful prompt on them ("what superhero would you be?," "what's your favorite local place to relax?"
