The supervisors toured the exhibition with some of the 100+ local partners who helped create it. Then, for an hour, former foster youth who helped design the exhibition shared their stories with supervisors. This argument became one of the foundations of The Participatory Museum. This is the participatory platform model.

Such participatory activities would be seen as a waste of time. This sounds ridiculous, but it’s the way many museums approach participatory projects. nothing happens.

I still get fidgety listening to the podcast, but now I see it as an artifact of a supremely conducted participatory project rather the sole product of the process. And they made me appreciate them as superb facilitators as a particular kind of participatory experience: conversation with strangers. They really cared about me.

This month brings three examples of museums hosting meetups for online communities: On 8.6.08, the Computer History Museum (Silicon Valley, CA) hosted a Yelp! The unconference got lots of locals "in the door" who otherwise hadn't considered the museum a useful or interesting place. meetup for Elite Yelp! I don't think so.

Yesterday, I had the delightful opportunity to participate in the 3six5 project , a yearlong participatory project in which 365 people write 365 journal entries for every day of 2010. It combines personal stories with a sense of being part of something bigger. The project's originators call it "a crowdsourced journal of 2010."

Traditional exhibition design, in which the museum has a specific story or message to tell, doesn't easily accommodate visitor co-creation. This realization--that a single museum voice was not the best way to tell a particular story--formed the basis for MN150 , the exhibition explored in this post. It was at the fair.
