During a workshop on museum visitor participation, someone spoke up and objected: "this might work in California, but it will never work in Texas." I saw how participatory techniques were working in diverse museums around the world. Cultural differences can play out on local levels as well. This is a human desire.

Our county board of supervisors had brought their official meeting to the museum. The supervisors toured the exhibition with some of the 100+ local partners who helped create it. Then, for an hour, former foster youth who helped design the exhibition shared their stories with supervisors. Nine years later, I still believe this.

People often ask me which museums are my favorite. It's not the extent to which they are participatory. I visit lots of perfectly nice, perfectly forgettable museums. In some cases, that's based on subject matter, as at the Museum of Jurassic Technology or the American Visionary Art Museum.

There are lots of great science museum resources, but not where these kids can walk after school. Our programs end up being the hub of the local science learning ecosystem--especially in communities where there isn''t a science center for miles in any direction. Where it didn''t work, no local support stepped up. It''s powerful.

On a recent trip to DC, an old friend showed me around a new exhibit at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), From Memory to Action: Meeting the Challenge of Genocide. It's a small space that features stories of recent and current genocides and encourages visitors to "take action" via an interactive pledge wall.
