I eagerly read about a new social psychology research study in which whites, Asians, and Latinos engaged in a simple collaborative activity--making a music video together. This week, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) opened a new temporary exhibition called The Psychedelic Experience , featuring rock posters from San Francisco in the heyday of Bill Graham and electric kool-aid. The space is full of funky, period-ish furniture, everything touchable, everything open to sprawl on or hang out.

For example, right now, Temple Contemporary's offices are packed floor to ceiling with broken musical instruments from classrooms across the city of Philadelphia. The cuts were so deep that school music rooms are full of unplayable instruments.

95% of our piano users play music, beautifully. The outcome is open-ended and visitor-driven. This is the participatory museum, played out loud. This week, it was a little guy , attended by a stuffed toy on the piano bench. It's rare that someone sits down to bang out noise. The activity is clear and well-scaffolded.

I’ve long admired Improv Everywhere , the NYC-based participatory public art group. The recording starts with two and a half minutes of music without talking. It feels too "guided"--even when it opens doors to new kinds of experiences. We want our cake (exciting social interactions) but aren't willing to overly prime visitors.

But since the spaces are largely open, it feels threatening to approach strangers. But it's the same inhibition that allows otherwise shy people to dance with strangers at clubs--for some people, loud music and a less intimate setting are opportunities for social interaction rather than limiters.
