Well, widgets are basically movable, sharable mini-applications that can be used to raise donations, take action on a cause or spread information and awareness about your mission. These types of badges are not usually very interactive and only allow for a logo and/or photo, short description of the cause, link to a video or more information, possibly some sort of progress indicator and of course a donate now button. I'd like to thank new Idealware blogger Debra Askanase for the inspiration for this post, which actually take from her idea for a post around fundraising and advocacy widgets, and which she graciously let me run with due to my slight obsession with widgets.

Many of us were digusted earlier this month to learn that once again Yahoo had cooperated with the Chinese authorities' request to turn over a citizen's private records, this time the discussion group threads of 35 year-old Li Zhi. The information was used to stick the dissident and former civil servant with an eight-year sentence on the charge of inciting subversion. This gets a little geeky, but it really shows off some of the sophistication

Over in the US, Yahoo! And, you guessed it… you can easily and quickly configure your own widget (or ‘badge’ in Yahoo-speak) and install it on your website, blog and / or social network page with a simple cut and paste. If you’re interested in reading more about the campaign, Lawrence Bender has written a guest post on Yahoo’s Yodel Anecdotal blog.
I’ve been having a lot of widgety thoughts recently, so I thought I’d bundle up a few loose ends in the one (long) post.

If you do use Amazon S3, please make sure that you keep your credit card information updated with Amazon. There’s tons more information I could impart but I’ll save that for later when I feel more comfortable I’ve started working with more and more Wordpress-based nonprofit Web sites such as those at asianamericansforobama.com and apaforprogress.org , stepping in after the site has been set up.
