In DC, I worked half-time for NASA as an electrical engineer and half-time for the Capital Children's Museum (now defunct) as a science educator. I designed electricity workshops for families. I made $26/hour at NASA and $7.25/hour hour at the Museum. I wrote puppet shows about science and ran a "stump the mathematician" booth.

People who work with non-professionals on participatory projects often talk about finding "neutral" sites for meetings or meeting on their (the non-professionals') territory. If I ran a poetry or drawing workshop, we wouldn't critique participants' ideas for poems or drawings. Level the playing field or tip it in their favor.
