The nonprofit Benetech team built the revolutionary Bookshare library for this community, all online, and based on the powerfully flexible ebook. We named this library Bookshare because it was created with an army of crowdsourcing volunteers, many of them blind people themselves, who scan the books using optical character recognition.

When Bookshare scans a book, the OCR program removes all accent marks from non-English languages. One book I worked on included more than eight languages, including Polish and Hungarian, with some unusual accent marks. If you see typos, a few will be ours in oversight, but most are in the original printed text.

My recommendation to the advocacy community is to continue to pursue a “yes-and” approach, as we have so far with the TVI and the Stakeholders’ Platform. I would class this as TVI (nearly identical) plus additional provisions creating a similar exception for schools, libraries and archives. However, my suggestion is to pursue the U.S.
