Just testing this new feature in typepad that lets you automatically cross publish to Facebook profile. What's nice about it is that it puts a link to your blog post in a mini feed. Right now I was using the blog friends feed. See larger image here. It didn't prompt me and it automatically published it. Any answers?

And, after some back and forth with Typepad Support person named Carla, I was able to learn how to edit the advanced templates. One such platform was Typepad. Typepad is a paid service based on Movable Type , a very popular blogging platform, that is proprietary. Add a few important plugins, and I’m back to where I was just a few days ago on Typepad. This migration, unlike the Mac OS -> Ubuntu migration, has been completely painless.

This week was a bad week for online blogging services. First the blogging service JournalSpace , with hundreds of users, just, well, died, because they didn’t have a proper backup. They hosted a small percentage of the blogs out there (in comparison to, say, TypePad or Blogger.) Always have a disaster recovery plan.

A ways back, Six Apart promised that it would open source MovableType , their flagship software product, and the software that underlies their TypePad service. This blog (and my personal blog ) were on TypePad for years, and I rather like the MoveableType interface and feature set. Yesterday, they finally released it.

I can even send lessons to Posterous or other blogs, as explained in this post. I considered making a private Posterous or blog for the docs, but I think I'm going to stick to HTML where the template is easier to edit, and I can more easily organize content and embed in Salesforce. There's a Mac and PC version.

It works on a number of different blogging platforms, including the one I use, typepad. maybe it is suggesting that I should write a post about my blogging workflow! I followed the ant trails to the Chronicle of Philanthropy blog post today asking the question, Should Twitter Recommend More Charities? If you look in the comments , there was a lot of discussion and on nonprofit blogs about whether number of followers is a meaningful indicator or can be translated into value for nonprofits.

Also, I’ll be moving this blog soon – probably next week. I decided to move both of my blogs off of typepad, and to other platforms. My main blog is moving to WordPress, this blog is moving over to the Metacentric.org Joomla CMS. It’s definitely worth a listen.

Services like TypePad and Wordpress tend to be top-of-mind platforms for new bloggers, but the session covered a ton of features about what makes Blogger different and great for nonprofits such as: Free hosting (use your own URL!). Ability to post from iGoogle or any other gadget container. Scheduling posts to be published at a future date.

What ChipIn allows us to do with the widget and page is do this grassroots fundraising via my blog. I use typepad, so I wanted place the widget in the sidebar of my blog as well. It was very easy to set up! The service is still in beta, so there were still some minor glitches.

In the short 6 months that I have been blogging, I have come to the conclusion that blogging is the missing piece in a successful social media strategy. Blogging allows nonprofits to quickly and easily create and post content that’s timely and relevant to the here and now.
