This is the fourth loan I've made to an entrepreneur using Kiva, but the first one to an entrepreneur in the United States. Kiva facilitates regular people, like you and me, making micro-loans to entrepreneurs who aren't able to get a loan from the bank. In the past, Kiva only worked with entrepreneurs outside of the U.S.,

When I loaned her $50 yesterday (my first Kiva loan), only one other person had given her a loan, Sergio from Switzerland. Kiva was started by a husband and wife team, Matt and Jessica Jackley Flannery. Two years later, Kiva has taken off. Ryan Gunderson of Riches for Good also made his first Kiva loans last week.

With the assistance of dedicated volunteers, Kiva also maintains a presence on different social networking sites and has recently established a presence on Second Life through the Techsoup Nonprofits Commons Project. Kiva is not a charity. I sat down with to learn more about their efforts on Kiva's behalf in the virtual world.

If you had told me a year ago that I would watch these two people discussing Kiva in front of millions on TV, I would have laughed."

TripAdvisor Combines Philanthropy And Marketing By Letting Reviewers Give A Free $25 Kiva Microloan | TechCrunch : TripAdvisor is demonstrating what Shah calls a “a very big trend”. In March 2012, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman put up $1 million to let other people try Kiva.
