Prior to Public Allies I was a first-generation college student pursuing my Associate of Arts (AA) degree at Phoenix College, working part-time with the City of Phoenix Head Start and being a mother to my wonderful child. After a while working in my community and serving, I yearned to continue to grow and be challenged.

I had the pleasure of serving as Principal for a Day at Arizona School for the Arts (ASA) on October 27 via a program put on by HandsOn Greater Phoenix. I came away from the day inspired and invigorated to see so many students receiving rigorous academic instruction and also passionately pursuing their study of the arts.

Last week I hosted a little contest to win a copy of Darius Graham's book, Being the Difference: True Stories of Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things to Change the World. After 34 years in the Navy, Rick Koca "retired" - and started StandUp For Kids (S4K) , a nonprofit that works with homeless and street kids.

That’s a pretty big difference, between 33 and 25. Rather, the differences are mostly due to how we collect the information. What we ask and how we ask it makes for a big difference in estimates. The size and the money behind it make a big difference in generating a sample that the Census Bureau can really stand behind.

To make matters worse, Charity Navigator seemed standoffish and unwilling to work with the field or adjust its approach despite some pretty obvious shortcomings in its methods. For part of this years ASB service, my group got to work at an after-school program for at-risk kids, ages 5-11, to help them with their homework.
