Over the past year, I've noticed a strange trend in the calls I receive about upcoming participatory museum projects: the majority of them are being planned for teen audiences. Why are teens over-represented in participatory projects? Is it a problem or a great starting point to focus on participatory experiences with teens?

Let's look at the statistics from three big participatory projects that wrapped up recently. This citywide festival showcased work by 1,517 artists competing for a $200,000 top cash prize awarded by public vote. 1,708 artists participated. An estimated 18,000 people attended, of which 4,929 nominated artists for the show.

To that end, our exhibitions are full of participatory elements. Community members, artists, and organizations increasingly see our museum as a place where they can advance their own goals, and so they approach us. Visitors can comment on how we can improve or what they would like to see.

There are many participatory experiences that appeal primarily to adults, and they are designed distinctly for adults. There's a huge difference between the edgy, DIY beauty of Candy Chang 's participatory urban artworks and the dayglow colors, exclamatory language , and preschool fonts of most museum interactives.

Engagement with local artists. One of the things we love about exhibiting local artists is that they are often here to talk with visitors about their work. It's not unusual to see an artist showing a visitor how she constructed something or created an effect. We do have friendly gallery hosts, but not every hour of the day.

Click is an exhibition process in three parts: The Museum solicited photographs from artists via an open call on their website, Facebook group, Flickr groups, and outreach to Brooklyn-based arts organizations. All evaluations are private; all artists are unnamed. They are sensitive to the artists who are being judged.

We had about thirty participants ranging from MAH trustees to artists, educators to architects, moms to grandfathers. For example, one of our groups was focused on commuters. There's useful energy that arises when you put a teacher, a techie, a mom, and an artist in a group and ask them to work together.

Every other year, they convene TUPAC, a group of 35 outside advisors, including teens, college students, Temple University professors, artists, philanthropists, and community leaders. It’s not unusual for us to meet with an environmental activist, a balloon artist, a farmer, and the Mayor of Santa Cruz all in one day. The "insiders" are another example. In some cases, the artist is not comfortable, or there are insurance and liability issues. The overlaps we put in the core benefits--everyone wants free admission, for example, and the neighborhood discounts.
