People are now coming to the library to see it as it includes content by all the 500 participants from that night. In painted wood and styrofoam, it was a masterful and whimsical refusal to answer that pesky question of whether games can be art. That's one of the goals of research institutions and cultural spaces in general.

Earlier this fall, I read this headline: "Stanford study: Participation in a cultural activity may reduce prejudice." When the music video was focused on Mexican culture, the researchers found that the white and Asian participants demonstrated a decrease in prejudice against Latinos, both immediately after the activity and six months later.

The content is meaty, multi-lingual, and timely. Elsewhere in podcast-land, Radiolab did a fascinating piece about cultural appropriation and gate-keeping in hip hop music. Some serious parallels to curating exhibitions and performances, especially with living artists. The topic is online professional identity. Sound familiar?

The first wave of critique focused on the very valid question of why Schimmel was fired in this manner. Schimmel's departure was seen as the final confirmation of Deitch and Broad's populist, celebrity-driven approach to exhibitions, and that concerned many critics , artists , and museum directors in the art world.

The course is roughly split into two parts: defining beauty (both universally and relationally, through "big idea" texts, videos, museum visits, and artist lectures), and exploring beauty (through encounters in formal art contexts and the wider world). But it's mostly just content. I can identify artworks by famous artists.

Looking closer, I saw that each seat had its own handwritten label, telling the story of the Philadelphia cultural institution from which it originated. They were there for artist talks. They live their mission, working in questions and projects rather than exhibitions and programs. The community drives the question.

Guard staff who are willing to let an artist step between two panes of glass to perform. It’s a great project that allows us to keep researching and creating content around our collection, and we need about $10,000 per year to produce it. We are culturally in a time of serious recalibration and that's a bumpy ride.

That's a more complicated question. It's a question of HOW we decide, not just WHO makes the decision. Don't assume that content/form that is relevant to you or your existing audiences will be relevant to people from other backgrounds. People ask questions. I expected it to be both physically and culturally uncomfortable, something like going to a dentist in a Harley garage. I was wrong; while the experience had its negatives, it was one of the best content-related social experiences of my life in an art establishment like no other. People tell stories.

And I talked about some of the challenges of finding the right income and expense models for a museum that operates more like a community center than a traditional cultural institution. I was surprised by her question. As cultural anthropology has swung away from a vision of authoritative history and toward the embrace of multiple perspectives, there is potential for those stories to come from all over the place, including visitors themselves. Balancing multi-vocal content with a comprehensive narrative can be tricky.
