We said yes, and they have now participated in several events, offering a unique mix of traditional tea ceremony, koto music, and bedazzled plastic microphones (see bottom left of photograph). Lots of people were there (I ran out of handouts – I was surprised to see how many people showed up.) There were a very wide range of people there, from folks who didn’t know a whole lot about open source, to those who were developing open source apps. That speaks volumes to me.

Why the Video Contest Worked Video contests are one of the most challenging kinds of participatory projects to pull off. They asked people to make videos about themselves. It is much easier for people to talk about themselves than about an externality like an exhibit or a science concept. I've watched a couple hundred.

I set up a flickr group, uploaded some instructions and some photos from the past half-century, and invited people to celebrate. 54 people joined the group. There were displays about the terror of motorcycle accidents, the freedoms public transportation affords, and the ways vehicles can enable people to enjoy places that are otherwise inaccessible to them.

Many fabulous participatory projects--like the Johnny Cash Project or the Art Gallery of Ontario's " In Your Face "--don't require language. You could even get creative with documentation--photos instead of text, music instead of words--but it's limiting. People could also caption each other's videos, but that's more intensive.

70% of participants see, read, learn from the community but might never actually interact by writing a blog post or taking other action (caveat: Jeff says to NOT forget or neglect these people, they are still important!). Side Trip is an immersive environment full of interactive experiences that let visitors share their own stories of the 1960s, make their own rock posters, and explore the music and vibe of the time. I saw teens and adults who sat and did this activity for 45 minutes and wasn’t surprised to hear that some people spend over an hour on it.

I’ve long admired Improv Everywhere , the NYC-based participatory public art group. They construct wild performances in everyday settings, invite regular people to participate, and document their work well. For about half an hour, hundreds of people play together, silently, as directed by disembodied voices inside their headphones.

On June 4, we opened The Tech Virtual Test Zone , a new 2000 sq ft gallery at The Tech Museum of Innovation featuring exhibits on the theme of art, film, and music that were originally developed in Second Life by a community of creative amateurs. We did not ask people to design whole exhibits and hand over CAD drawings so we could build them.
