Ushahidi entered our legendary third NetSquared Mashup Challenge in Santa Clara, California in May 2008. Finalists were invited to present in person to the NetSquared community at a one-day conference. People in a crisis area could send an SMS (text) message to report an outbreak of violence or other catastrophic conditions.

The result displays in table format as well as visualized on an interactive shaded map of the US. Over 1,500 mashups later, and a first prize win in the contest, DataMasher is proving to be a great experiment in data transparency. You can create mashups like Carma.org by combining data sets or services. Because data is powerful!

Like most professionals these days, I have to spend a fair amount of my time preparing presentations, to my boss, my colleagues, my clients, etc. I have noticed that, personally, I respond better to the presentations that rely more on the pictures than the words. I think a lot of other people do too, and I wondered why that is.
