The Best from the Nonprofit Technology Community

I was fortunate enough to get two Google Wave invites last week (thanks to @nonprofitdaily and @donortools ). Now, I am still figuring out how Google Wave works. That said, I wanted to let nonprofits know that I think it would be a good idea to grab a Gmail account that matches your nonprofit’s Web site and social media URLs (if it is still available), because seemingly your Gmail account becomes your Google Wave persona, if you will. It’s a good thing because I messed up the first invite and attached it to my personal Gmail account. When in fact, I wanted
Google has been working double-time launching new products over the last few months. From Google Wave to Google Voice , to Social Search and now Google Buzz , I think that now is a good time for nonprofits to reserve a Gmail account if they haven’t already. Unlike Google Wave, Google Buzz requires a Gmail account. I haven’t had the chance yet to look too deeply into their products, but I am big believer in nonprofits being proactive and protecting their online brand from squatters.
In most cases, the audience wasn’t asking about money: they were asking about time. When the National Women’s Law Center first applied for a Google Grant ? $10,000 10,000 worth of free advertising each month through Google’s AdWords program ? Google AdWords charges are calculated on a cost-per-click basis. Now, we’re seven months into our Google grant, and with my co-workers and I knew it was at least worth trying. It was free , after all.
An obvious benefit is about take front and center stage in a few days when Google launches their Real Time Search to the public. Nonprofits that do utilize social media will have more control and will show up in real time results more often.  Here’s a video demo from Google: ...Tags: Many nonprofits still struggle with how to measure Social Media ROI and are not so clear on what exactly the benefits are of utilizing social media. If your nonprofit is not utilizing social media, then the only content that will show up is what
Use Google Webmaster Tools Google Webmaster Tools  is a suite of Web apps designed to help you optimize your site for the Google search engine. Google will actually help you find broken links on your site and fix them, optimize search results for your site as well as giving you feedback on how Google spiders are searching through your site. Nonprofits take note: Google Analytics software application has shattered previous barriers to analyzing and optimizing websites. No longer do you have to spend thousands of dollars a year to track how visitors interact with your website. If that sounds too promotional, as if Google paid me to say it (they didn't), well, sorry, but it's true. In tough economic times - and with a potentially bad holiday donation season fast approaching And it's relevant. Heidi Bucheister, Outreach and Operations Manager at OneWorld.net , said, "Google Analytics is a robust tool for
Avinash Kaushik , Google We When you get to page analysis, you can easily get down and dirty and waste too much time. The The time is right to focus on metrics, Key Performance Indicators, and tips on how to measure the effectiveness of individual pages. Now that you're off your home page, you have time to focus on other important pages on your website. We focus too much on micro reporting on our websites, most of which is comprised of too much page level analysis.
They have a great set of Google icons , but not yet for Google Buzz. My graphic design skills are very limited, but I did create an interim Google Buzz icon for those early adopters out there. Save some time and just right-click the icons below for those sites your organization uses: IconsPedia.com is my source for free social media and mobile technology icons. I
I have been thinking for quite some time about how somehow RSS (Real Simple Syndication, a name which is completely unhelpful - and not real simple - to those who need help understanding it) has a serious image problem. It means you can get the information from that webpage sent to you, every time the page is updated. (More RSS should actually stand I believe RSS is one of the the keys that open the door to the world of web 2.0, and if somehow it was as easy to explain as some of the other social technologies, that might change a great deal in terms of helping organizations get
