Earlier today, I attended the American Foundation for the Blind’s (AFB) National Leadership Conference in Chicago where I received the 2013 Migel Medal. The Migel Medal, often called the highest honor in the blindness field, is awarded annually to one or two individuals whose careers exemplify exceptional accomplishments in the field.

The principal of the school, proudly showed off plans to expand the campus over the next few years, with high quality architectural site drawings that would have looked perfectly in place in Chicago. So, in Hong Kong and in Beijing we saw sensory stimulation rooms for these children. Our team toured the school.

Because it was my first time meeting the students, part of the half hour was spent getting to know each other. A high school English teacher in Zimbabwe, whose name is Betty Makoni , began hearing stories from her students after school, that they had been raped. Betty and six of her high school English students founded an organization called the Girl Child Network. And, their weapon is poetry. I just saw them as heroic.
