We’ve been doing a little experiment at our museum with labels. We decided to approach the label-writing for these boards in a participatory way. If museums are truly about inquiry-based models for learning, we need more tools—especially in history and art museums—to promote inquiry-based engagement.

What happens when you let visitors vote on art? Let's look at the statistics from three big participatory projects that wrapped up recently. Each of these invited members of the public to vote on art in a way that had substantive consequences--big cash prizes awarded, prestige granted, exhibitions offered. In LA, only 4% voted.

Visitors bond and bridge through participatory experiences at MAH. There were times when coordinating a fire art festival while researching social capital theory made me want to burn my computer. Both emphasize museums reaching out into the community to support, understand and experience what the community is already doing.

We decided to show a selection of Danny's lists in a hallway surrounded by a participatory element where we invite visitors to contribute to new lists on evocative themes ("Things we forget," "The best feelings in the world," etc.) One of the collections on display is a set of "found lists" collected by a local farmer, Danny Lazzarini.

The Leading Change Summit was more intimate (several hundred people), participatory and interactive, intense, and stimulating. And while anything you do the first time will not be perfect and in many cases stressful, in the end it was a good experience. What makes for a good team experience is a good on-boarding process.

I can't say that any one experience--working on a collage with other visitors, swinging on a hammock, discovering a participatory display for pocket artifacts in the bathroom--directly contributed to increased attendance and giving. This week, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) opened a new temporary exhibition called The Psychedelic Experience , featuring rock posters from San Francisco in the heyday of Bill Graham and electric kool-aid. I happened to be at DAM for work and got to experience this amazing exhibit. It is an incredible museum experience.

It's a little living room in a lobby area that invites people to lounge on comfortable chairs, leaf through magazines and books related to art and Santa Cruz history, and generally hang out. The area that houses the Creativity Lounge also shows art. Lisa and I have fundamentally different ideas of what a "good" museum experience is.

Our curator writes labels about licking the art. Merilee Mostov and the Columbus Museum of Art.
