Over the past year, I've noticed a strange trend in the calls I receive about upcoming participatory museum projects: the majority of them are being planned for teen audiences. Teens are developmentally focused on social identity-building and may feel more compelled to share their voices and express themselves than others than other visitors.

What's the best way to maximize participation in a social platform? In social media, the rule of thumb is 90-9-1 : 90% spectate, 9% comment or rate content, and 1% produce content.
