Last week''s New York Times special section on museums featured a lead article by David Gelles on Wooing a New Generation of Museum Patrons. He grew up with a special love for and perspective on museums that makes his commentary particularly well-informed. The article both energized and frustrated me.

I don't usually fist-pump while reading the New York Times. But I’d been scribbling notes for an art museum label post for awhile, and then yesterday, the NY Times had a review of a new show at MOMA, Comic Abstraction. Also, the teen selections often featured teenagers interviewing visitors about their reactions to the pieces.

The New York Hall of Science’s Career Ladder successfully recruits and advances neighborhood teens as floor explainers, and their full-time staff includes many people who have come “up through the ranks.” I think the religious institution model is a particularly interesting one.

An institution might have a formal framework and an informal sensibility or vice versa. The Public School's framework is more open than Machine Project's, but that doesn't mean it has a more informal sensibility. Teen docents are more serious than adults because they want to be treated like professionals.
