It also goes by the name software as a service (SaaS), which is basically using Internet-based software or services like Google Docs , Salesforce CRM , and Microsoft Office Live Workspace . During our recent GreenTech campaign on Reducing Your IT Energy Use , I fear we may have failed to provide a solid list of TechSoup donated and discounted products for nonprofits and libraries that live in the cloud and reduce IT energy consumption. We've already done a bunch of work to suss out what cloud computing is all about in the context of green IT and will undoubtedly do more.

Well let me state for the record, I'm not really over the moon for Google Buzz . Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Delicious, Flickr, Google Docs, Google Reader, there's Google Buzz. Google is really pushing it through Gmail. It's a good idea but here's here's my problem...

The Best from the Nonprofit Technology Community

Use Google Apps for your e-mail and file storage solution. Unfortunately, Google Docs are just not ready for primetime. Ever wonder what it takes to get a IT system up and running as a nonprofit under 25 people? In these difficult economic times, it’s really important to get your act together regarding your nonprofit’s finances. When
If you're running any kind of organization, a suite of office software is essential — at the very least, you need a fairly good word-processing program, a spreadsheet application, and some sort of presentation software. Feature-rich Microsoft Office has made that particular market its own for at least the past decade, but now a few strong alternative software suites are fast gaining ground......(
Google is on a fishing expedition to see if we're willing to take web-surfing to a whole new level. My colleague Steve Backman introduced us to Google Wave a few months ago. Google's introduction of Wave is nothing if not ambitious. The early version of Google Wave I saw looked "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) . I
What do you do five years after shaking things up with Google Maps. If you are Lars and Jens Rasmussen, the core developers behind Google Maps, you apply yourself to a different way of thinking about collaboration and communication over the Internet. Spend an hour and a quarter watching Lars, Jens and their project manager Stephanie Hannon and their crew on Youtube from the June Google I/O conference. Its hard not to start thinking, I could use this thing in my work and when can I try it out. Background. Email has been around for almost forty years, starting
And, Google documents allows you export and import pretty easily without too much reformating hell. And, with google groups you have an option of reading via a RSS feed. So, I've used wikispaces, pbwiki, socialtext, jotspot, and writely (now google docs). But, since Google Last month, when I had my horrible computer crash, I lost one or two documents and a few emails. It was because I wasn't only backed up within 24 hours, not minutes.
Are you aware of the free tools offered by Google for nonprofits? You may be familiar with Google Apps, but not realize their Premier/Education Edition is available free for qualifying nonprofit organizations . In this post, I want to specifically look at the features available with Google Docs. Google Docs puts an end to that problem by making it easy for you to collaborate with others online. How often have you worked on a document with other people and have not been sure which was the latest version? Or perhaps you missed some important changes
A few months ago, I blogged a bit about Google Wave , and how it might live up to the hype of being the successor to email. Short story: Google Wave is an odd duck, that takes getting used to. Google Wave is also, at this point, awkward. Now that I've had a month or so to play with it, I wanted to share my initial reactions. As it is today, it is not that revolutionary -- in fact, it's kind of redundant.

At any rate, this week's assignment is a doozy-- A Week Without Google . That's right, no Google Search or Google Alerts, no Gmail or Google Talk, no Google Video, no Google Google Docs or Google Calendar, no Google Maps or  Google Earth, no Google News, no Google My daughter is taking a New Media Research studio class at NYU where (somewhat to my dismay), she's learning about using RSS and Delicious. I'm dismayed because I would have taught her about these things for free, but you know college students.
