I am fascinated by the incredible differences in what people contribute based on format and phrasing of the invitation to participate. Our current exhibition is about why people collect things. One of the collections on display is a set of "found lists" collected by a local farmer, Danny Lazzarini.

We're hearing on a daily basis that the museum has a new role in peoples' lives and in the identity of the county. but I didn't have numbers to back it up.

This past weekend, in conjunction with our exhibition about Ze Frank's current participatory project, A Show , we hosted " Ze Frank Weekend "--a quickie summer camp of workshops, activities, presentations, and lots of hugging. Then again, Saturday was hardly normal at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. It was pretty freaking amazing.

What motivates people to come to the museum is not the idea that there's something that's open for the next three months and they can come any time. This case full of real people's handwritten signatures is reminscient of the haunting pile of Holocaust prisoners' shoes in the permanent exhibition, providing a hopeful complement to that devastating set of artifacts. The table had no comparable physical analog to help people understand how to connect their cards to the multimedia content.
