When I heard the tollbooth story, I started thinking about gifting as a model for participatory experiences in museums. This post discusses participatory gifting in three parts: the why, the what, and finally, the how. But if you give them something to give to someone ELSE, then your content spreads, packaged in a bundle of goodwill.

The theme is "Civic Dialogue," and the journal includes articles on the historical, cultural, media, and museum practice of getting people talking to each other (including one by me about such endeavors on the web). But now, many bars are also offering participatory experiences around content.

It is an exhibit of user-generated content? In the other case, the institution was unwilling to engage in the conversational environment and ended up isolated, fueling the fire. This is why I always say that participatory tools are about relationships, not technology. Is this a research project? Is it a conversation?

A willingness to share information and content, also known as transparency ; planning is discussed and user participation is welcomed. Extension programs use wikis, flickr, blogs, tagging, and other tools to share information and content. Social Interaction - People can have conversations and create content together. It's messy.

I want to see more multi-person exhibits, more prompts for discussion about content, more tools to facilitate connecting wtih other visitors whose interests are similar or in some way useful to your own. By the standard set by a culture that judges MySpace as dangerous, perhaps these in-person interactions are even MORE dangerous.

Here's the basic idea: while you are at the museum, you save digitizable content--either content you make (photos of yourself) or content you collect (museum-supplied text or media of interest). It's an outpost for some cheap content, and that's immediately obvious to me when I get there. These pages often look barren.

I've been arguing that "visitors as participants" means participating BOTH with content and with other visitors, but that begs the question: do visitors really want to have social experiences with each other?
