When I started this blog in 2006, I made a multi-media introduction to the concept of "museum 2.0" Venue as content platform instead of content provider: the museum becomes a stage on which professionals and amateurs can curate, interpret, and remix artifacts and information. I feel strongly that there are huge issues with racial and ethnic diversity in museums and arts organizations that deserve a million more posts. One was a conference on pushing our practice in art museums. In library- and museum-land, the participants were 80-90% women. I don't know if gender diversity deserves more posts.

I'd love to see a museum offer temporary tattoos instead of stickers at entry. I expected it to be both physically and culturally uncomfortable, something like going to a dentist in a Harley garage. They are the kind of people we can't even get to the museum door, let alone through it. but that's for another post.

This week, I heard about a neat renegade art/museum awakening project in Providence, RI: Urban Curators. The project achieves this elevation by literally hanging gold, gallery-style frames in derelict spaces within the city, framing objects and views that are of aesthetic or cultural value. The interpretation was frequent, clear, and adult in tone and content. Some of the signage pointed out “firsts” happening at the preserve—new techniques for introducing species into new habitats, creating a completely mammal pest-free environment, and inviting people to visit the project while underway.

We’re in a consumer culture. Rather than “liberating” people to the whole virtual world, we constrain them to a world of directed content and clear goals. Operation Spy, the narrative immersion experience at the International Spy Museum, does the same thing. Most of us get stressed out by total freedom.
