If new programs are sufficiently different from the traditional ones, they may be more effective as standalone program tracks than as gateways to the traditional experience.

Between the giant squid brainstorming and experimentation, I gave a talk to the larger Smithsonian Institution about multi-platform museum experiences. I am an impatient person.

We started with focus groups with current and prospective members, asking about their interests and what kinds of experiences they would really value as part of membership. I created a directional pyramid to make a point about social content in museum; namely, that museums are not offering networked, social experiences—and therefore will have a hard time jumping to initiating meaningful social discourse. The participatory "ask" is high--to create original content. After the conference, the wiki switched from being a participatory site to a useful record. For example, imagine you are creating a multi-chapter planning document. But wikis are a very specific tool. sites and don't offer traditional rewards. So when do wikis work?
