This exhibition represents a few big shifts for us: We used a more participatory design process. Our previous big exhibition, All You Need is Love, was highly participatory for visitors but minimally participatory in the development process. Among other things, I led a workshop on "social objects" --artifacts and exhibits that inspire people to point, discuss, snap photos, and generally share their experience both with friends and strangers. When I tell people this in a presentation, it can sound vague or dubious. Tags: design participatory museum.

Two weeks ago, I conducted a participatory exhibit design workshop with staff at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Between the giant squid brainstorming and experimentation, I gave a talk to the larger Smithsonian Institution about multi-platform museum experiences. I am an impatient person.

We wanted to find a way to really connect with our members and understand what experiences they value most at the Whitney. We started with focus groups with current and prospective members, asking about their interests and what kinds of experiences they would really value as part of membership. And we confirmed that hypothesis.
