For many years, people frequently suggested that Benetech , the nonprofit tech company I founded and lead, get more involved in Washington, DC policy and legislative action. Our longest-term donor, the Skoll Foundation , went so far as to introduce me to a DC-based advocacy firm. Isn’t that where good ideas go to die?” I was wrong.

I just attended two days of meetings in Washington DC on the first year of the DIAGRAM Center , held at the Office of Special Education Programs in the Department of Education. We are using the modular approach of the DAISY Authoring and Interchange Framework, which defines modules and profiles for the representation of books, journals, etc.

Launching the new version of the website has been exciting, and I was happy to see a great blog post on the new capabilities from the National Braille Press' blog. While I was at the ATIA conference in Florida, our Director of Marketing was in Washington DC at another conference. But, it's not just in Washington DC.

Earlier today, I attended the American Foundation for the Blind’s (AFB) National Leadership Conference in Chicago where I received the 2013 Migel Medal. He started Computerized Books for the Blind the year before we started Benetech, and became one of our earliest partners. It was named for the first board chair of AFB, M.C.

I just got back from the ATIA conference, which included meetings of the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS) committees. It was a blast, given that we've more than quadrupled the number of students we're serving in less than four months!

Bookshare.org hits 35,000 Books! Although we are well known in the national and international disability field, it's been about ten years since I spent much time in DC (last time was the original Section 508 federal advisory committee in the 90s). It's always exciting when we hit another milestone like this. caused quite a stir.
