My contribution to the panel is to provide context about the use of social media in emergency and disaster response as well as an overview of some of the tools we saw deployed last year and we may see in the future. It eventually garnered 45,000 users who took advantage of the easy-to-access tool to place reports.

A similar example is that of an Atlanta city councilman who chose to post a message to Twitter asking for a medic to respond to an unconscious woman on the street rather than to dial 911 when his mobile phone battery was very low. The real-time web has also revolutionized the way we support local communities in disaster.

I’ll keep an eye on Twitter. Recently, they took us to Georgia, and I learned that in Georgia, it is called the Ellis Island of the South by refugees who come into our country because there are more people that come in through the Atlanta airport than there are New York City and what used to come through Ellis Island. .
