They give high-energy, interactive tours of the Metropolitan Museum and the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). They were “preaching the museum gospel” in NYC via alternative tours at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I imagine that there are a lot more presumed barriers to break down at an art museum than a science museum.

There are many participatory experiences that appeal primarily to adults, and they are designed distinctly for adults. There's a huge difference between the edgy, DIY beauty of Candy Chang 's participatory urban artworks and the dayglow colors, exclamatory language , and preschool fonts of most museum interactives.

I grew up professionally in the science and children's museum field, where touching is guaranteed and floor staff spend more time helping visitors learn and ensuring their personal safety than they do protecting the objects. Art, however, does not come to museums pre-hardened. The level of touching, especially of art, has increased.

While the majority of experience-based museums like children's and science museums have unrestricted noncommercial photography policies, many collections-based art and history museums continue to maintain highly restrictive photo policies. This month brings three examples of museums hosting meetups for online communities: On 8.6.08, the Computer History Museum (Silicon Valley, CA) hosted a Yelp! The event brought hundreds of hip, young professionals to the museum for lots of booze and partying. Consider the experience of the Computer History Museum and their Yelp!

I am glad this conversation is happening and that both museum professionals and local Santa Cruzans are engaged. To me, the backlash against participatory and community-centered experiences is not surprising.
