This past July, artist Guillermo Gómez proposed to restore a piece of art. Both objects and art-objects would be part of this continuing transformation and evolution.

Negotiated agency" strikes me as a really useful framework in which to talk about visitor/audience participation in the arts. Visitors talk over the tour guide. The museum invites art-making in the elevator. This is a kind of negotiation jui-jitsu that can create art through creative tension.

Every once in a while I come across a project I wish I could have included in The Participatory Museum. an exhibition produced with schoolchildren at the Wallace Collection in London, is a lovely example of co-creation that demonstrates the multiple benefits of inviting audience members to act as partners in arts organizations.

While the talk may encompass serious topics, the attitude is light and the conversation is not structured or overly guided. Third places are more participatory and offer fewer basic amenities than most cultural institutions provide. Of course, the objects were chosen for their pecularities, and in some cases, such as a giant licorice tricycle shaped like a shoe , the imagined usage (guide dog training distraction device) is almost as reasonable as the real thing (2000 Olympics closing ceremony vehicle). The participatory element is modeled well by the "official" content.

I’ve long admired Improv Everywhere , the NYC-based participatory public art group. I think many of us could construct comparably successful participatory experiences of this type to develop exhibits or audio tours that explicitly support unusual social and interactive behavior.
