Visitors bond and bridge through participatory experiences at MAH. There were times when coordinating a fire art festival while researching social capital theory made me want to burn my computer. We seek to understand this by listening to and developing ongoing dialogues with a range of community members.

George Scheer is the director and co-founder of Elsewhere Collective, a fascinating "living museum" in a former thrift store in Greensboro, NC. Proposals involve sculpture, performance, participatory-projects, videos, and installation that use and respond to the museum’s collection. Restoration is a formal gesture for most museums.

On June 4, we opened The Tech Virtual Test Zone , a new 2000 sq ft gallery at The Tech Museum of Innovation featuring exhibits on the theme of art, film, and music that were originally developed in Second Life by a community of creative amateurs. I also learned that the best money in museums for someone who's starting out is in art modeling. After a long day running around a science center, I would show up at the Worcester Art Museum in the evening and make $20 just to stand around and listen to a painting instructor talk about art. Museum workers other than curators are gaining power, often rising to directors of major museums. And, yet, there is so much to do. Many people were in the throes of expansion.

I''m glad to see coverage about art museums involving visitors in exhibitions. We don''t involve people in content development to "boost ticket sales." There are many curator and museum director voices in the article, but not a single quote from a visitor who engaged in one of these community projects. It''s not easy.
