I was reminded of these two design principles when exploring the Johnny Cash Project , a crowd-created music video for a posthumous recording of Cash singing "Ain't No Grave." To construct the video, artist Chris Milk assembled images and footage of Johnny Cash in a sequence along with the song. That's hardly revolutionary.

Last Friday night, my museum hosted a fabulous (in my biased opinion) event called Race Through Time. The event was oversold, and participants raved about the experience. Everything about the event--from the time slot to the tone of the content to the music played--was designed for that audience. Performances just for teens.

I'd love to see a museum offer temporary tattoos instead of stickers at entry. The real surprise was in the tattooing experience itself--the pre-outcome affair. I was wrong; while the experience had its negatives, it was one of the best content-related social experiences of my life in an art establishment like no other.

Every other year, they convene TUPAC, a group of 35 outside advisors, including teens, college students, Temple University professors, artists, philanthropists, and community leaders. The cuts were so deep that school music rooms are full of unplayable instruments. There's no money to fix them.

And then, based on their research, they remake the world for a weekend, twisting the person's environment with sensory experiences that explore and challenge their deepest inclinations.
