Many of the young people who participate in the dance classes in Mad Hot Ballroom , and in Streetside Stories' workshops, are young people of color from low-income families who may not have an opportunity to go to any arts programing outside of school, and definitely not during school, where most arts programming has been cut.

Depending on your budget, you may be able to get a popular artist, but you can also reach out to local musicians. Art show – Are there any local artists in your area? And, with their permission, you can even sell some of the pieces with a portion going back to the artist and the rest going to your organization.

I think about how hesitant I was to become an artist, because I didn't see role models, and even to this day how hard it is for me sometimes to find peers who are women of color, because of how systematically they are pushed out. I'm an artist and an institution builder. The kind of art I do is art that gets engaged into the public.

Then, I started going around the country teaching workshops around spiritual activism: why it's important to take your yoga off the mat and into the world, and the different ways that we can get involved. But every time I would leave a workshop, I would leave with this haunting feeling of, "Now what?" It was so fun. Just rude.
