As stress increases, our amygdala sends Paula into a downward spiral in one of two ways: by turning on our “fight” response (making us irritable) or more commonly, turning on our “flight” response (making us procrastinate with another pack of cookies rather than write that report). According to a report from Blackbaud #GivingTuesday, 2017 processed more than $60.9 In 2014, 39% of 12th-grade students reported that they volunteered at least once per month according to findings from Child Trends. Numbers from more recent studies, like the 2008 Report on Charitable Confidence by the Brookings Institution, show that public confidence in the sector has risen somewhat since then, but is still disturbingly low—and projected to stay that way. Back in the early 1990s, I had a day job studying nonprofit spending and reporting as part of something called the Nonprofit Overhead Cost Study , a joint project between the Urban Institute and Indiana University. It seemed that the world wanted nonprofits to spend nothing on administration and fundraising, and many were reporting just that.
