Earlier today, I attended the American Foundation for the Blind’s (AFB) National Leadership Conference in Chicago where I received the 2013 Migel Medal. The Migel Medal, often called the highest honor in the blindness field, is awarded annually to one or two individuals whose careers exemplify exceptional accomplishments in the field.

Each year the International Computer Refurbishers Summit awards a lifetime achievement award. This year the award went to Nancy Jo Craig who runs the nonprofit Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council (CACRC) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Thousands of people were pouring into Baton Rouge. It was not an easy road for Nancy.

Address on receiving Caltech’s Distinguished Alumni Award May 18, 2013 Caltech was founded to give back to society through science and engineering, to discover knowledge and apply that knowledge. People are immensely proud of their creations and would love to see them used to benefit more people.

Worth Trust , an Indian social enterprise providing employment to people with disabilities, partnered with Bookshare to provide book-processing services and expand the library.

For many years, people frequently suggested that Benetech , the nonprofit tech company I founded and lead, get more involved in Washington, DC policy and legislative action. We were up against immense political pressure to rescind the award. Isn’t that where good ideas go to die?” I’d say, dodging the recommendations.
