In some ways, it is astonishing how many different donor management packages there are. There is, of necessity, a lot of overlap betwen CRM systems and Donor Management Systems. Many of the CRMs also show up here, although there are quite a number of packages that did not show up in the earlier survey.

For another client, I helped them vet vendors for their new website, taught them the difference between Joomla, Drupal and Plone, and I helped free them from a vendor who was particularly egregious in their hosting charges, among other things. I have other kinds of projects as well – those that use my talents somewhat differently.

That means that organizations with a major giving or annual fund focus are likely to have some performance differences. Online giving growth was not slowed by the most recent recession.

At the same time, it really doesn’t make a lot of difference to the customer that was going to hire Mpower anyway. The customer only hits a down side if Mpower does a poor job as a vendor and there is no alternative vendor to switch too since the ecology is small.

Which, on one hand, seems like a lot, but it’s not, when every cell phone, PC, router, cable set top box and toaster has one. The 1 st tool was MySpace back in 2007. Launched the advocacy Twitter handle in January 2010 (@Advocate4PanCAN) and it is growing steadily. For example, when the staff and over 500 volunteers were on Capitol Hill for Advocacy Day in June 2010, I documented the whole experience on Twitter (#AdvDay2010) with pictures, video and updates.

The middle way isn’t splitting the difference. I’m not sure I quite understand the fear, but it’s something to pay attention to.
